How to use AMACO Shino glaze to achieve beautiful colors and textures? You should follow the firing and glazing instructions recommended by the manufacturer to ensure the glaze fully expresses its color, depth, and Shino-style texture.

1. Bisque Firing at Cone 04

Start by bisque firing your pieces at Cone 04, or approximately 1063°C, to ensure the clay is strong and porous enough to absorb the glaze evenly.

2. Apply approximately 3 coats of glaze

For general use, it is recommended to apply 3 coats of AMACO Shino to achieve the standard shade and texture specified by the manufacturer. Each coat should be allowed to dry before applying the next to ensure even glaze thickness and reduce the likelihood of defects after firing.

3. For darker colors, add more coats.

If you want a darker color or enhanced glaze effects, you can apply more than 3 coats. However, glaze thickness can affect the color, gloss, and flow of the glaze after firing, so it's always best to test on a test tile before applying to your actual piece.

4. Glaze fire at Cone 5 for best results.

AMACO recommends glaze firing at Cone 5, or approximately 1186°C. This temperature is designed to allow the Shino glaze to fully express its colors and textures, including the subtle color variations and unique glaze surface.

5. Can be fired at Cone 6.

In addition to Cone 5, AMACO Shino glaze can also be fired at Cone 6, or approximately 1222°C. Generally, the glaze will melt more, resulting in a slightly increased gloss and potentially more glaze flow than when fired at Cone 5. Therefore, if using on pieces with intricate patterns or thin edges, it is advisable to test beforehand to ensure the desired results.

The choice of temperature and glaze thickness directly affects the color and texture of AMACO Shino. By following the manufacturer's recommendations and always testing on test tiles first, you can create unique ceramic pieces with beautiful and consistent results in every firing.
