SOC : School of Ceramics by Pottery Clay

“Unsinn im Sinn!”

Pottery Clay

Mothana Ceramic

Studio”
55_Ceramic.studio

]]>What is a good sculpture in your opinion? Skills of sculptors or good materials used or both of them should go together. Let's listen to the thoughts of Aor Suthiprapha, artist and ceramic designer whom Pottery Clay had invited to talk today
Aor Suthiprapha started sculpting with no interest in sculpture because her first thought was that sculpting was a sloppy job. She was admitted to the Department of Industrial Design in the Faculty of Architecture at Chulalongkorn University which had 5 majors so ceramics was hardly in her eyes at all. Until she met Ajarn Pim Suthikham who didn't teach ceramics just in the classroom but gave students the opportunity to try everything that the department could provide equipment and raw materials for.
“My first thought about ceramics was that I didn't want to study about it at all, I wanted to study interior and wear pretty dress working in an air-conditioned room but when I met Ajarn Pim and tried to make a sculpture I felt in love with it and continued working on it since then. After I graduated, I worked as an assistant to Ajarn Pim in her studio. At the same time I also had a full time job as a ceramic designer for Mae Fah Luang Foundation. I was responsible for designing ceramic works. I alternated between working at the pottery factory there and coming down to work in Bangkok. I felt it was fun to be in touch with materials and raw materials for actual work. My previous thought of avoiding dirtiness has completed gone. Since then ceramic work has always been fascinating stories that I like to follow. This might be the charm of ceramics that I felt in love with without even realizing it.” ”
Ceramic work has no fixed formula and 1+1 doesn’t have to = 2
If you thought that whatever you sculpted previously would come out the same next time then let me tell you that you were wrong. This is because ceramic work has many environmental factors that make the work you thought would turn out the same to become something out of your expectation.
“In each ceramic work, artists have no way of knowing that 1+1 = 2. We can only speculate in advance from experience that when this is mixed with that, it should be something like this. There is no way to tell 100% at all times. So we will say to our customers that it's going to be something like this because with ceramic work you will always have to wait and see the result after firing. It requires precision from experience and at the same time it is fun to play with the workpieces and it is always a challenge for us.”
“Designing ceramics for people to make is another challenge we faced but at the same time it makes us discover that there are still many things that we don't understand especially in technical matters because when we studied we learnt the basics of ceramic work for design but we never studied in depth into the raw materials used to create the work. As a result, when designing it was difficult to understand the nature of the material. It then became a limitation of work. In addition, the question arises every time we see pictures of ceramic works in foreign books. The question is how they did it. Why was it that when we tried to do it, we couldn’t do that? Why was the work of foreigners so detailed? There was a technique that we felt was more advanced than the ceramic we knew at the time. Their ceramic work was not just about crockery but a sculpture that both thin and translucent. It was the same ceramic work but how did they do it?
“When I thought about this I felt perhaps we had to do it ourselves so that we could understand it to get a good result. It was not just doing the design on paper and sending it to someone else to make a model out of it. It was like finding some gaps and wanted to go out to explore and find some answers.”

Let's go on a journey...to find the answer
Since I don't know, I have to find answers and learn by myself. Aor Suthiprapha decided to go to study in this field especially in Sweden. The country that supports education in a way of free study
“The reason for choosing Sweden was because it was a country that offered free education together with the teachers I wanted to study with were there. It was bilingual education. Both English and Swedish were used. However most part of the study were practical part that focused on looking and observing therefore communication in different languages was not a hindrance at all. However I felt that I didn’t have much in term of practical experience so I decided to study all the basics first. If compared to the education in our home country it was like studying in a polytechnic which gave me an opportunity to meet the national artist there who taught me everything and allowed me to understand how they did it according to the book I saw.
“Upon completion of my study, I gained a Certificate in Ceramic at Capellagården- School of craft and design then I pursued a master's degree ofApplied Art, Ceramic at Högskolan för Design och Konsthantverk While completing a master's degree, I also worked as an assistant teacher. After I graduated, I became an artist assistant for another year before returning to Thailand permanently. When I came back I felt I had obtained a superior level of study because I found many answers for many things I had been searching for.
“Especially my curiosity about why their work could amaze me and why that type of work was rare in Thailand? The answer was that the materials available in Thailand were quite limited. The lack of good options to create workpieces and the next thing was the lack of understanding of the materials or raw materials used plus the unknown of some suitable techniques. Although it could be just a small technique but could make a difference.
“Actually at that time while I was there I didn’t think about returning home and had applied to exhibit my artwork at 2-3 galleries. I was also thinking about opening a company but when I looked at the economy and the money in your own pocket I knew I didn’t have sufficient fund so I decided to come back to Thailand and opened my own small studio. At the beginning of my return it was the first era of craft trend .The trend of handcraft such as woodworking, fabric work, ceramic work were hot trend in our country at that time so I was lucky to become one of the first that the Thai media was watching that this woman was doing this.”
Artwork "GOOD"
thin work, blue and white stripes
If you ask what kind of work is Aor Suthiprapha's work?“Thin work, blue and white stripes” is probably the most direct and clear answer.
“The work that can be called our signature is a matter of thinness that seems to be something that we have long suppressed the curiosity of how foreigners can create very thin work like that and that type of thinness comes with a beautiful shape. When we know the technique we then select materials to match our work. Therefore we got the answer to the kind of work we are looking for. Also, we have added our preferences in the small lines into our work together with blue and white until it becomes our signature work in the end
“Creating work in such a way that we consider it as our own challenge because the more thinness it is the more challenges the shape is. That is the best for us and let us knows that the raw materials can go further than what we are doing now. Just have a good technique and the material will promote your own work. Many people when they know that we emphasize on the thinness of our work they often ask whether we are not afraid of breaking it. Broken work is normal. We will do our best and if it's broken, then it's broken. Just do it again. Actually, we can learn a lot from the broken work. It makes us understand the nature of the material why it is broken. Are we pushing too hard? This doesn't mean that only sculpting method can cause it to break or crack but it can be because of the material and technique because everything has to go together. For us, each time we change the materials we have to learn about it again because each type of clay comes with its own characteristics.”

Sculptors and raw materials, when they match everything is fine.
Of course, artists usually have their own exhibitions. Aor Suthiprapha is also one of them. However, she doesn't have many solo exhibitions. For the reason that ceramic work is quite a big event and it takes quite a long time to create workpieces and most importantly, the raw materials that she used it is not something that is commonly sold in our country.
“We mostly use porcelain clay which is imported from Japan. We later learned that Japan has hundreds of this type of clay. When looking at the clay sold in Thailand the quality is quite poor and expensive. At that time, Khun Pink who ownsPottery Clay brought Snow White clay to test it out and discovered that it was very good and reliable. The outcome was as good as intended. The work flowed because you didn’t have to wonder when it would crack or to feel anxious whether it would be ok after firing. There are already so many things we need to concern about when making ceramics. Therefore, having a type of clay that works well can help to relieve our stress.
“Furthermore, here there are products that support people who work in ceramics with in-depth techniques and professionalism. The advantage is that they will come to us to understand what materials we use, what clay we use, and try to meet our needs. For ceramic workers who need to use quite specific tools if you don't go abroad to buy them yourself, it is quite rare to find them in our country. Fortunately, having aconnection in this regard is quite good. They can find what the ceramic workers needs for their artwork. Their imported goods are foreign goods that are sold in Thailand. The quality is of the same standard that we buy from abroad.”
“There are many types of ceramic accessories. Some of them are cool and very good and also very expensive but if they do not answer our job requirements, we don't need to buy them for example a slab roller which we don't use because the technique we work with is not Slab work. However if it's for glazing, we can mix the glaze ourselves by finding araw material from here to mix it ourselves
.
“And another thing I like about this brand is that as we are people who work with many types of clay,Pottery Clay has many different types of clay to choose from. We can choose to buy according to the type of work that we do. All of which do not require us to go aboard and find them ourselves. Especially since we haven’t been able to travel lately, purchasing them via Pottery Clay is a great option for sculptors like us.
“But for those who want to make ceramics as a career I would like to suggest that they learn the basics of ceramic work firmly because it is important. The foundation of knowledge will link how to prepare raw materials, what type of glazing to try, how to store material, how to manage tools. Once you have solid foundation, you'll know exactly what techniques you want to work on and it will then gradually narrow down to what necessary things you need and what tool is the right one for our work. Everything will be narrowed down then you'll find more and more personalized ceramic paths.”
For Aor Suthiprapha, she may have found her favorite type of ceramic work today but that doesn't mean she'll just stop because ceramic work is unpredictable and the materials used for making sculptures can go on for hundreds and thousands of things. Also the most important thing is that she doesn’t see ceramics as something that would bring her fame but it is something that gives her an idea and perspective on work and life more than expected. As long as the perfect balance of the sculptor and the raw materials are met, you will find the best in ceramic work as easily as her.

“Just do it and do it with all your might.” A short sentence that Pottery Clay agrees! from Khun Nokwheat – Hiran Chaichana, a ceramic artist who owns the brandAbsurd Fox a ceramic brand that can be said to be a new member of the sculpting industry in Thailand because the age of this brand hasn’t reached 2 years old but their awesome sculptures may be comparable to the famous brands that have been around for a long time.
You don't need to have a degree in art in order to be good at sculpting
If anyone thinks Khun Nokwheat has an art degree that’s why her sculpture work is well known and accepted then you are wrong because the degree she held was far from art. Khun Nokwheat graduated from the Faculty of Business Administration with a major in hotel management from Assumption University
“After graduated, I didn’t work in the same area of my study but I went to work as an organizer for more than ten years in which my mother usually told me ‘to always be patient in working at the office’ but one day my mom saw that I was very stressed so she asked me if I wanted to resign and accompanied her. It was considered to be a turning point that made me thought about whom I was wasting my time for that I had no time for people who had been sacrificing their time for me throughout our lives. Therefore, I decided to resign and to work in my family business which was a small grocery store
“While working in my family business for almost a year I thought about how our life revolves in a loop at all time which was waking up early to open the shop to sell stuff then closed the shop. Why couldn’t I bring my past work experience to improve my business? So I started looking for aworkshop in order to learn to find myself. At that time, there were classes in oil painting, watercolor and ceramic sculpture. However, I thought that the ready-made art should also be able to use in daily life as well so I started focusing on learning how to make ceramics. While researching I stumbled upon the porcelain. My family has accumulated some Benjarong workpieces and I also received a ceramic glass as a gift when I was working in the office. It was not only beautiful but also functional. The key point was it lasted a long time so I started to search for information about where I could find sculpting classes and I found them at "Chamroen Studio". The owner made me felt relaxed and taught me not to compare with others. After completing the course there I didn’t stop learning and went to study again at “Bang Sai Royal Folk Arts and Crafts Center”
Because I know someone who has a friend studying sculpture at Bang Sai Royal Folk Arts and Crafts Center therefore, I was advised to enrol there. However, learning to make sculptures there requires a lot of dedication and one year worth of studying according to the curriculum but Khun Nokwheat was not afraid.
“To study at Bang Sai Royal Folk Arts and Crafts Center, there was a rule that I had to study and stay there with only a break on Mondays. I knew the conditions and told my mother that I wanted to go to school and that I had to stay there. My mother did not object. She probably began to think that her daughter had an artistic mind so she let me go to school. While I was studying I followed the general teaching process but I noticed that when I had to sculpt by following the exact measurement proportions. I felt much stressed. However when the teacher let me did it freestyle it turned out that I could complete the work in less than an hour. Also, the teacher said that my workpiece didn’t need to be colored much because it looked sweet in itself. I used that feedback as a guideline to me that my work was a sweet line of work.
“The teacher suggested that if I continued studying for 6 months, I would receive a certificate but I felt having a certificate didn’t demonstrate anything so I talked to the teachers at the department about learning just what I needed for 4 month only because my idea was that only by start creating a workpiece to demonstrate my craftsmanship that is acceptable is a proof of how far my work can go.”
Crooked work, sweet work is my way to go
Many people may be familiar with balanced proportions of ceramics which are symmetrical throughout the workpiece. However, Khun Nokwheat’s work is not like that. The highlight of her work is the flow of her work that comes from the feeling inside and becomes the identity of her work under the Absurd Fox brand.
“After I finished my studies at Bang Sai, it was at the time my sister wanted a ceramic workpiece with marble pattern for her bakery shop which was opened in Nakhon Pathom Province so I asked the teacher how to create the marble pattern. Then I tried to do it myself based on my teacher’s advice. Since blue was the color I liked after making it I felt it was beautiful so I had kept on making it. From my past work experience I could see the point when it can be sold and the precision of work. Since then it has already become the identity of my work.
“My work is different from others that it is ‘Crooked work’ Normally after firing if the workpiece is twisted or distorted, it cannot be sold but since I used to work in a line of AE (Account Executive) before, I knew that this one could be sold because it still had its shape. Its oddness was the selling point in the work itself because it was crooked but still balanced in itself.
“Using the name Absurd Fox because when I was studying moral subject in the university’ there was a word Absurd which the teacher explained in depth and I really liked this word. It was a word that indicated what my personality really was. Then by adding the word Fox which came from when I was studying at Bang Sai my buddy used to made a joke by calling herself a venomous snake and saying that I was a fox so this was how the brand name was born.”
Good raw materials help to streamline the work
One thing that Khun Nokwheat emphasized a lot when creating a workpiece was about the raw materials used. Being a person who was not good at chemicals and focused on ease of use, flexibility therefore she chose to buy all the materials from a single brand.
“When I first start sculpting I used one brand of clay that came in a large bag of 50 kilograms. Later someone recommended a company called Pottery Clay which was a one stop service shop that sold pottery clay and all related accessories and it was also near my house so I went to have a look and bought clay from them. When I opened the bag I felt good because the clay there was divided into cubes, 5 kg each which made it easy to use as you didn’t have to be too tired from having to cut it yourself and the texture of clay was in good quality. I had bought all type of clay that they had such asCelaton, Snow White, Roller Stone All of which were good. Since then, I have been buying clay from them.
“Moreover, I went to look at other products and found colours which was our weak point because I was not good at mixing chemicals so I wanted ready-made colours that had a variety of shades. It appeared that Pottery Clay had an answer for this. There were many colours to choose from. They were ready-made colours that were easy to use with many options. to choose from. Since then I have never had to buy from anywhere else because this place was a One Stop Service for sculpting work. If my mother had heard about Pottery Clay before she bought a kiln for me, she would have bought it from here.”

One of the prides that Khun Nokwheat told us was that all of her customers who contacted her and wanted to exhibit her work or made orders with her came to her all by themselves. One of them was a Japanese restaurant called Masa- Otaru Masazushi It was a sushi restaurant whose owner used to be the 4th sushi chef in the world and was third a heir of the family that has been making sushi for almost 100 years
“We were very fortunate to have clients who viewed our work as art and not just as a common dish or container. Our omakase sushi plate with mable pattern was the main dish and the signature of the restaurant. Also, the chopstick holder, cups for ginger and lotus root including the hand towels used inside the restaurant were all our work. A black wave was our new pattern that they bought and used in their Tokyo branch in Japan. In addition, our work was also 1 of 3 products that Banyan Tree Hotel (Thailand) had selected and sold them in theirBanyan Tree Gallery too
“No matter how successful we are, we have also received some negative reviews. For example, some young people who may have completed the study in this field came to see our work and said that all of our workpieces were burned according to what he was taught at school. We told him that even though our workpieces was burned we still managed to sell them. All of our items were sold out so I want that person to understand by looking from many angles and be able to bring outstanding points to present. There is no absolute right or wrong. As for the glazing, we admit that we are not quite good at it but in regards to the shape we are confident that no one defeats us.
“Personally, I feel that the heart of sculpture is sculpting and the view of beauty depends on each person. When someone criticizes us we listen and think accordingly in order to always improve ourselves because the advantage of being criticized is that we have a mirror that reflects what we may not see. However, we have to know how to choose the right mirror to reflect it.”
For those who have never learned the basics of sculpting before and would like to try doing it. Khun Nokwheat would like to conclude that “Just do it and just by doing it and doing it with all your might. Art work doesn't require a lot of thinking because artwork just needs to look beautiful and that's it. Action is equal to having started it. By start doing it and allowing your experiences to teach you.”

From being a person with a hurry lifestyle, with impatient character who is not so good with slowness however when she came in contact with the sculpture, Khun Nui - Supis from Supis Studio discovered a charm that is more than artistic beauty because sculpting is about transcending limitations in yourself. “I tried sculpting for the first time 5-6 years ago but as an impatient person i realized that it would be better for me to buy bisque to draw underglaze or to paint with glaze rather than to gradually sculpt a workpiece by hand so I stopped working on sculpture and focused on drawing patterns only. But last year, the sculpture came back to my life again when one of my acquaintances brought 10kgs of clay to me to try to sculpt during the time I resigned from my full-time job in order to have art as my main work. With a slower lifestyle, I had time to understand myself and things around me more. When I tried to come back to sculpt this time, I discovered that the sculpture has a hidden charm in every step, and every step helps to overcome my own limitations especially impatient and anticipating of results.
" For example, when sculpting by hand if it was in the past, I would be in a hurry because I wanted to see the work done quickly but now I gradually do it calmly and pay attention in every step. When the sculpting is finished, I learn to wait for the clay to dry properly without rushing to complete it in a short time. Before placing workpieces in the kiln, I don’t expect them to be perfect every time because after firing the workpiece may crack, discoloured, or may not turn out as expected. But that's a lesson I can learn and gradually understand and improve my flaws and mistakes. In a way, it allows my mind to absorb the slow pace of life, stay calm, have fun sculpting, and feel excited every time my workpiece comes out of the kiln.
"When I started to enjoy working with ceramics. I began to search for other ingredients to try. Just then, a friend told that there was a shop called Pottery Clay that sold a wide variety of equipment. When I went to the shop I felt that it had everything. However, As I was a newbie who usually searched for information on Google without knowing whether it was wrong or right therefore I decided to go to the shop and to make inquiries which I always received good and clear advices from there. Since then I became their regular customer. The products that I buy regularly because I like it very much is Keane Clay because of the fact that the clay has small granules of iron inserted in it. When sculpting and shaping, you can feel the roughness. When firing, it comes out as khaki with small grain spots which makes my workpiece looks charming.
"Another type of clay that I like very much is ready-made coloured clay because of my fascination with its colours. I use it to make a show plate with round colour spots that are very beautiful. When I want a lighter color, PTC recommends mixing it with snow white clay making it more fun to make marble. Moreover, There is a large selection of Amaco colours available. Plus, it's easy to use and has a nicer color than normal clay.
"For me, sculpting is both what I do for pleasure to have fun with my own imagination and allows me to enter the flow stage and practice overcoming my expectations. Previously, when I felt distracted, I would only draw but now I sculpt clay. When I opened a Supis Studio, there were people following my artworks. Some came to appreciate and some came to buy my artworks to collect or to use. Since I have made my artworks with my own experiment and gradually improved them at the right pace. When the results came out as desired and there were some people who liked and supported them. I already felt contented.

Who would have thought that in 2021 pottery would become a hot trend right now? Pottery Clay would like to provide some guidance for anyone who wants to try and get started as a potter without getting lost with 5 following steps that newbies should follow.
Step 1 “What do you want to sculpt?” Because everything in the world can be used as inspiration for sculptures from small pieces of jewelry like earrings, rings, pendants, to pots, vases, and jars
Step 2 “Tools are required or just two hands are enough” Finding information to make sure whether what you want to sculpt can be done by hands or equipment is necessary no matter it is a pottery wheel, a clay scraper, etc., that can help forming your sculpture as desired.
Step 3 “Where can you buy sculpting supplies? Even though professional tools are not required but at least clay used for sculpting must be purchased. So the easiest way is to search on the internet to find out where to find the necessary sculpting supplies.
Step 4 “Try it and like it, want to be serious, then find a course” Nowadays, there are many workshops that teach sculpting. If you are sure that sculpture is what you like then you should look for a sculpting course that suits you. You will get to know the sculpture work not in a casual way and also without having to randomly guess but to start doing it in the right way instead.
Step 5 “Practice often and you will be good at it.” The more you sculpt, the more skillful you become. No matter by taking a class or doing it on your own, practicing often will make you become more skillful. After that alongside with your imagination, your sculpture will take shape as desired.
Beginners who want to learn to sculpt can start with these 5 steps. No matter you want to do it as a hobby, as a gift, or for sale, you can do it comfortably in a uniquestyle.
]]>You should plan to load light-glazed workpieces first and should have a cloth ready for wiping hands especially after touching a dark glaze.
Before start loading workpieces, make sure that the kiln shelves are cleaned of glazes from the last firing cycle because if there is a trace of glazes left it will smear the coating of the new workpiece or damage the kiln shelves. Then apply the kiln wash thoroughly before placing the new piece on the shelf. You can clean the glaze drop by chiseling with a tool or a stone file. Fill the hole and refinish with kiln wash
To load the kiln, set the kiln legs to be triangular, i.e. 2 points in the left-right corner and 1 center point at the opposite side and make sure the shelf is 1 inch above the kiln floor so that heat and air can move evenly throughout the kiln. When placing the workpieces on the shelf, be careful not to break or crack the thermocouples.
What must not be forgotten is the coated workpieces cannot be stacked and touched each other. In addition, there must be a gap between each workpiece. This type of workpiece placement requires more space than loading the raw material. Also you should wipe your hands every time when touching the workpiece in order to avoid contamination of the coating between the workpieces. For accurate glaze firing results, CONE should be placed in order to check the heat inside the kiln and placed it in the proper position which is about the center of the kiln height. If possible, place more than 2 CONES for more accurate results.
Furthermore, gloves should be worn when cleaning the rack before use to prevent debris. When the bottom shelf is full then carefully places the other shelf on top. Do not press or hit the kiln bricks at the kiln legs of the same size in the same position as the kiln legs below. Fill this shelf in the same way as the bottom shelf, leaving 1 inch of space between the piece and the kiln lid. Then slowly close the lid of the kiln. Please be careful because you don't want dust and brick crumbs to fall onto the workpieces. Occasionally a “ping” sound may be heard, which may be due to the hot glassy glaze hitting the cooler air around the workpieces. Don’t forget to keep a record in the log book from the beginning before turning the kiln off until the process is completed.
To complete the process of making ceramics, underglaze decoration should not be missed. Do you know what it is? Don’t just do it but do it right. Here is something for you to read.
Underglaze is a method of decorating pottery. Underglaze is available in a variety of colors from commercial retailers including indigo, blue, black, red and green which you can create possibilities with a wide variety of choices.
The melting point of underglaze is higher than glaze. There is a wide variety of techniques to use underglazes including brush painting, spraying and dipping on the single or the second fired products. However, do not apply thick or multiple layers of underglaze which might result in bristles and diluted color after firing.
]]>In the ceramic work, one of the techniques that makes the workpiece come out beautifully and remarkably different is the use of glazes to add details. Nowadays, there are many types to choose from. Today Pottery Clay has summarized them here so that potters can select it according to their preferences.
Clear Glazes (Clear Glazes/ Transparent Glazes)
It is a glaze used to coat the product and then act as a transparent glass that is applied to the surface of the product to be transparent until the color of the clay or the color decorated on the surface of the clay can be clearly seen. It is commonly used to coat products that are decorated with colored writing under the glaze or products decorated with colored clay. The transparent coating acts like a thin, clear glass that is plastered on the surface of the product which maybe with or without color.
But if it is a transparent coating that has a color, it is commonly used to coat over decorated containers by scratching or carving patterns in order to make the carved patterns appear beautifully with clear patterns. In addition, clear glazes can be made at any temperature depending on the formula of ingredients used to make the glaze.
Opaque Glazes (Opaque Glazes)
is a glaze that can completely cover the surface of the clay. It is commonly used with stoneware products that do not want to show the color of the clay. The opacity of the glaze is caused by the raw materials that are the ingredients of the glaze with the ability to absorb light and not allowing light to penetrate through the glaze causing the glaze to completely cover the color of the clay. These substances are called opaque substances which include tin oxide, antimony oxide, chromium oxide, zinc oxide, and zirconium oxide, etc.
Luster Glazes (Luster Glazes)
is a glossy glaze. Shining like the skin of a mother-of-pearl shell inside. The key ingredients are lead that ensures good melting and gives the coating a glossy finish. Therefore, it is suitable for coating beautiful décor items only and it should not be used to coat food containers.
In order to use a pearl glaze potters have to be especially careful because the glaze is quite fluidity so it may damage the workpiece and the workpiece plate inside the kiln. There are 2 types of pearl glaze that are commonly used:
High Fire Glazes (High Fire Glazes)
are glazes fired at a temperature of approximately 1,230 – 1,460 °C , with feldspar and limestone as the main raw materials to help melt the glaze together with silica and kaolin. It is commonly used to coat porcelain and stoneware products. The coating is strong and resistant to scratch, acid and alkali corrosion. It can be fired in both oxidation and reduction atmospheres.
Intermediate Fire Glazes (Intermediate Fire Glazes)
It is used to coat Earthenware, Bone China and Stoneware. The coating is less rigid than the high power coating but it can reduce the cost of firing and make fresh glazes. It is quite popular among glazed work of sanitary ware, tableware and decorative products, etc. If coating at a temperature between 1,180 and 1,200 °C ,frit is used as a melting aid in the glaze recipe. However, if coating at a temperature between 1,200 and 1,230 °C , basic oxide is preferred as a melting aid in the glaze formula of more than 3 types as it will help to incorporate the glazes and melt well.
Raw glazes (Raw glazes)
It uses natural raw materials such as feldspar, silica and limestone, etc., which can be mixed into glazes without having to make frits first
Bristol Glazes (Bristol Glazes)
It is a result of an attempt to lower the boiling temperature of the porcelain glaze and maintain the strength of the glaze by using zinc oxide as a key melting aid in place of calcium oxide. The glaze has good fluidity and bright colors. Most of the glazes are used to cover the surface color of the clay but if too much zinc oxide is used, it will give the opaque glazing a white and shiny appearance.
Low Fire Glazes (Low Fire Glazes)
Glazes that are fired below 1,100 °C . Most of which contain lead or borax as the main melting aid in the glaze because the clay fired to the point of ripening the coating is less hard making it not resistant to scratches, acid and alkali corrosion. It has high gloss with bright colors and limited firing temperature range. If fired beyond the set temperature, the glaze will flow a lot and may damage the workpiece. It is commonly used to coat roof tiles, art and raku works, etc. It should not be used to coat food containers because food residue can fall inside the cracks of the glaze
Matt Glazes (Matt Glazes)
Glazes that have a smooth matte surface. The coating will not be shiny and does not reflect light or a semi-matte, semi-glossy surface with a slightly shiny finish, or a matte finish with a rough surface. The glaze can be fired at any temperature and can give a matte finish in a variety of ways. No matter it is
Crystalline Glazes (Crystalline Glazes)
Produced by the crystallization of some substances that are separated and become visible. It looks like a large or a small dot or as needle-like lines stacked in or on the glaze. The crystallization of the glaze occurs when the glaze is cooled under specially controlled conditions. The raw materials for crystallization are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide together with the crystallization time and the cooling time of the crystalline glaze. They can be separated according to the nature of the crystal as follows.
There are two types of “clay extruder”: conventional type and vacuum type.
How to use it is to send the clay through the clay extruder to be cut, ground, and mixed together similar to kneading the clay. If using a vacuum type, air will be sucked out of the clay when it is sent through a vacuum chamber.
However, if a conventional extruder is used, there may still be air in the clay which potters will have to remove it completely before it can be molded because if there is air remaining in the clay, it can cause problems while firing. Using extruder is not only comfortable but also extends the life of our joints.
]]>Gold, platinum, silver are the 3 minerals that novice potters should know because the colours are beautiful and they also look luxurious and valuable. Moreover, those 3 minerals can also be combined with other substances to get more colours as well
Gold mineral (Au) > can be used to write on glazed containers in the form of gold water for Benjarong. It can also be used as a substance that causes purple, magenta, pink, and ruby red. The gold mineral was first used in the product by Meissen Manufactory in Germany in 1830. 21 years later, France patented the liquid formulation of gold water. The shiny gold in gold water contains approximately 12% of gold which is dissolved in gold solution resin. Available in both matte and glossy types.
Platinum mineral (Pt) > is used for decorative writing on glazed containers because it is a mineral that does not react with oxygen. Potters can use palladium mixed with platinum to get a silver colour that not only is more luster but also still maintain that shiny silver for a long time. The platinum mineral also gives a grayish tint to the glaze however it is not very popular because the price is quite high. Most potters therefore choose other less expensive materials to prepare the gray glaze instead of platinum.
Silver mineral (Ag) > has one outstanding feature that is it is easy to combine with oxygen and becomes dull black. Silver oxide gives a yellow tint in the low temperature glaze that does not contain limestone and zinc. However, if there is limestone it will then turn brown instead. If silver oxide is applied on the glaze and then fired in a reduction atmosphere, it will produce a pearlescent glaze.
The preparation of the yellow pearl overglaze colour. It will be fired in a harsh reduction atmosphere from a temperature of 300-700 °C. After firing, the clay must be sanded off to obtain a pearlescent finish on the opaque white glaze. However, the current pearlescent colour is a result of lead borate (Lead borate), bismuth oxide and silver chloride or silver carbonate in a form of solution and resin at a high temperature of 650-700 °C in an oxygen atmosphere
]]>Stains used for ceramic glazesmust be fired at temperatures above the firing temperature of glazes so that the color does not disappear after firing. In addition, the colors must match well with the chosen glazes. The colors will appear as intended because some colors are not suitable for glazing with zinc, some colors are not suitable for glazing with lead, some colors are incompatible with magnesium glaze, etc.
When grinding the color in the glaze, the glaze should thoroughly be ground before adding the color near the end of grinding and continue grinding for a while. Or, if it's a fine finished color, grind the clear glaze separately and add the pigment to the glaze then stir the ingredients together.
Color powder used to prepare various glazes must be suitable for the production of coatings which is different from the mixed color in the clay both the raw materials used in production and the reactions that occur during the firing. The structure of the color mixture in the glaze is not as strong as the color mixed in the clay. Therefore, it will react to melt with the glaze while melting. After firing, the fine grains are stable and will be melted into the glazes
When the factory produces the color used in the glazes and then the test is carried out with a metal-coated drag method, which is a paint splatter. By taking the old standard color to compare with the new color and fire it. After firing, the test color will be clearly visible in the same test base before being measured with a colorimeter.
]]>In one ceramic workpiece, it may not be glazed only on the outside because the inside is glazed as well. If you only need to coat two pieces, it won't take long. You can do it gradually and you'll be done. But what if there are many orders, what will you do?
‘Glaze Fountain’ is an option that potters should not overlook
'Glaze Fountain' is a labor-saving tool for ceramic factories or studios that has to do a large amount of glaze inside the vessel because this coating aid can help save time in coating work quickly. The machine is a large stainless steel container. There are extension tubes and an automatic or foot-operated air pump.
which the working principle of ‘Glaze Fountain’ is sending pressure from below. It blows air through the pump tube to rise glazes up like a fountain. Then bring the desired container to cover the inside of the pipe to allow the glazes to penetrate into the container. And that's it! Your workpiece gets a smooth inner coating. Plus, the job is done quickly.
]]>What is Kiln Furniture? Some people just call it furniture. It is not wrong. It's just a shorten word and it is known among potters and people who use ceramic kilns or electric ceramic kilns.
But if you want to explain easily furniture in the kiln isa special type of ceramic that is in one of the refractory materials that can withstand high heat. At the same time, it is able to maintain its physical properties in a ceramic kiln environment. The furniture in the ceramic kiln is made from a special type of ceramic that is highly resistant to heat. Serves to support and protect the product during the high temperature firing process.
In general, the furniture in the kiln refers to various parts in the kiln such as kiln cars, product racks and rollers in continuous kilns, etc. The selection of furniture in the kiln must be made of materials that can withstand heat in the firing temperature range as well as resistant to heat and to the combustion atmosphere without bending. The workpiece material should not be very thick and should weigh less to avoid heavy pressure and not heated when used at high temperatures.
Ceramics for furniture in kilns include
Alumina-Silica > Widely used ceramics for high temperature applications. It is a material in the alumina-silica system. Most have some crystalline or amorphous structures connected by glass. The refractory materials in this system may be divided into three groups according to the alumina content: silica, alumino-silicate and high alumina.
Silicon Carbide > There are mainly three types of silicon carbide products on the market: second phase bonded silicon carbide, reactive bonded type and annealed type popularly called new crystallized silicon carbide. When comparing the properties of the three types, it was found that the load-bearing distance and the thickness were a function of the strength of the material. As the strength of the material increases, the density of the furniture in the kiln can be increased and the load capacity increases. Although the price increases with the quality of the material, the results in terms of productivity and energy consumption help to reduce the costs incurred in using this material.
But when comparing the properties of silicon carbide and alumina silicon carbide, It is likely to be used more because it is a stronger material. Relatively low price and can be used with fast firing cycles
However, silicon carbide deteriorates rapidly in an oxidizing atmosphere and reacts with many ceramic-making compounds. While alumina is inert to firing of most materials and can be produced with a smooth finish, it costs more and is lower in strength.
The most important factor in determining which kiln furniture should be used.
I must say that it depends on the price and service life because it directly affects the production capacity and energy costs. Therefore, it is likely that enterprises producing sanitary ware, crockery, electronic mats and ceramic products, etc. will need to re-evaluate the refractory materials used in the kiln in order to increase production capacity energy efficient and increase the ratio of workpieces to furniture in the kiln to improve product quality after firing for easy sorting and conveying for breeding. It can also increase the life of the furniture in the kiln.
]]>Decoration of the workpiece by sticking stained decals in the glaze and then fire it so that the decorative color on the glaze sinks into the glaze is widely popular because the stain color in the glaze is non-toxic from the solution so it is safe to use. The unique properties of the color in the glaze is commonly used to decorate bone china and porcelain products.
Color printed as a decorative pattern on that coating prepared from color mixtures with frit by having a higher whiteness temperature than color on glaze using a firing temperature of 900-1000 °C for bone china products coated with low solution frit glaze and fired at a high temperature of 1250 °C For the color printed as a pattern on the porcelain clay texture. The glaze is melted into the glaze layer while firing in the second ceramic kiln making the decorative pattern durable, not be easily chipped and unable to dissolve the toxicity on its surface of the coating
Preparation of colors in the glazes from stain colors synthetic fired at a high temperature. To prepare colors in the glazes approximately 10-40 % stain powder is mixed with the frit or glaze at the desired firing temperature. 60-90 % If embossed, add alumina hydrate. 0-20% The glaze applied to any glazes must be formulated to be non-reactive after the color is fired which will be earthenware glazes, stoneware or porcelain glazes. The types of stain in glazes that are sold include stain in the traditional glazes, stain in the lead-free glazes, stain in the fast fired glazes and stain in the fast fired glazes without lead
At present, the firing of decorative color in glazes is preferable to fast firing cycles of 60 - 120 minutes to save fuel and production time. The factory that produces colors for sale has invented colors in the group of fresh colors that are resistant to high temperatures and has good stability after firing. The stain colors factory has researched to produce more bright colors for high temperature firing and can control the amount of lead solution in the stain colors
The color in the glaze can be used to decorate the glaze of all kinds of crockery products but it is popular in bone china products and porcelain products. Each type of glazes has a temperature of firing along with the clay texture of that product. A good color in the glaze should has good stability in the glaze and be able to mix each and every color with each other to avoid problems when printed patterns overlap and colors should be bright after firing.
]]>Even though potters weren’t designer and builder of the ceramic kiln themselves, there are two main materials that make up the kiln that potters should know and consider them when deciding to buy a kiln, the two main materials are 'kiln brick' and 'fiber'
.'kiln brick' is a refractory insulating brick with fire resistance up to 1770 degrees Celsius. It is made from a mixture of kaolin, alumina and refractory clay mixed with air or other organic matter in the form of thick slip which causes the composition of the cavity resembles a natural sponge. When fired, the air voids in the brick produces less porosity insulating properties than heavy bricks hence weighs less. As a result, the construction of the ceramic kiln is lighter and can be easily trimmed with a hand saw and chamfered to a suitable shape to fit in various corners of the kiln so it is easy to drill holes to see the lights and can be used to build the inner wall of almost any kiln. Although the price is higher than ordinary heavy bricks, it saves a lot of fuel in firing. Because it helps to accelerate the firing temperature faster and also cools quickly after use.
‘fiber’ or ceramic fiber is a fiber made from a high-temperature ceramic material. It has a fire resistance value from 1,200-1,400 Celsius. It is lightweight and withstands rapid heat. But at the same time, it cools quickly, which is a disadvantage for slow-cooling kilns. Most are made of pure aluminum silicate which is melted at high temperatures and through high pressure steam to the liquid mixture of alumina silica and kaolin to separate these components into fibers of different sizes.
Although this fiber is expensive, it saves fuel than other types of insulation. It heats the ceramic kiln to the desired point with less heat loss. At the same time, fiber-based powders are harmful to the skin and respiratory tract so you should wear a mask and gloves every time you touch fiber. After a period of use, the fiber becomes brittle and deteriorates.
]]>One of the key issues that ceramic potters find it difficult to avoid is post-work waste management including cleaning the studio after use especially equipment or buckets that are soiled with mud and leftover glazes from the glaze tank which are insufficient to coat the workpiece.
The first waste that any potters will surely encounter is "mud" that is attached to the equipment after work. If washed in a normal basin, over time the washed clay will accumulate and form a clay wall along the pipe. As a result, the water pipe can be clogged. To avoid this problem, potters should install a clay trap or apply a grease trap to become a clay trap in order to solve the problem of having to strip pipes completely. When the water from the sink is rested in the pond, it will precipitate into a layer of muddy clay and clear water. Let clear water be discharged along the drain. Then take the mud that has been layered in the cement tray until dried and then discard it. By using this method, what potters need to be careful is food scraps should not be washed in the sink connected to the trap as they will accumulate in the clay and cause a bad smell.
For "leftover glazes in the tank" which are no longer required. Potters should wait until the glaze separated from the clear water first. Then remove the water by letting the glaze become hard dried and then discard the waste or to be mixed with the rest of other dry glazes which may result in a special and unique glaze.
]]>After using the electric pottery wheel, what should I do? Let me tell you that it's not difficult. Plus if you do it every time after using it, it will also extend the life of the electric pottery wheel.
The easy way to extend the lifespan of electric pottery wheel always start with connecting the ground wire before use because usually a standardly built of electric pottery wheel has a waterproof protection in the area where there is an electric current however potters should always wear rubber-toed shoes to prevent electrocution in the event of an unexpected emergency.
And when you want to move the wheel you should move it by lifting the wheels up and place it gently down. Do not pull or drag the wheel at all in order to maintain the precision or center of the key head and spindle including the plane of the surface of wheel head. ]]>In pottery, there are tools that are commonly used to decorate the sculptures to make them more beautiful. Most of the tools are made of solid wood but some are made of metal. Different handles and sizes are available. Therefore, potters should understand the appearance of the tool before choosing to use it so that when using it with clay in various works no matter it is for sculpting clay, ceramic clay, Buddha statue clay, modeling clay or any type of clay, the right tools will be used.
Increase/decrease appropriate gas pressure will affect the appearance of the flame at the nozzle and make a good firing atmosphere. Pottery Clay has simple rules for adjusting the flame at the nozzle to teach you.
