G-1 Wood Rib A wood rib or shaping tool is a tool designed for smoothing, shaping, and forming ceramic pieces, including hand-built and wheel-thrown works.
- Primary uses (smoothing and shaping): Used to press against the surface of the piece while the wheel is spinning to smooth the clay evenly, remove fingerprints, and help push the slope to form curves (such as bowl shapes or the curve of a vase) to achieve smooth and beautiful proportions.
- Draining water and removing air bubbles: Used to scrape excess water from the surface of the piece during shaping to prevent the clay from becoming too wet or soft and collapsing, and to help compress the clay more firmly.
- Scraping excess clay from the bottom of the vessel: The straight edge or angled part of the wood rib can be easily used to scrape off excess clay at the base of the piece attached to the potter's wheel.
Highlights
- Versatile design: The wood rib has different curved edges on each side, as well as small curved notches at the ends, allowing it to be used to conform to various curves of the workpiece.
- Hole in the center: Designed for a firm grip, preventing it from slipping easily when hands are wet with water or clay slip.
