A set of three-piece ware supports, often referred to as "Y-shaped stilts" due to the arrangement of contact points, are essential tools in glaze firing to prevent the ware from sticking to the kiln shelf, especially for pieces glazed all the way to the bottom.
How to Use
-
Preparing the Ware: After glazing, wipe off a small amount of glaze from the bottom of the piece. If you want to glaze the entire piece, including the bottom, ensure the glaze is not too thick to drip.
-
Placing on the Stilt: Place the ware onto the stilt so that the pointed tips of the stilt touch the bottom of the ware.
-
Typically, one stilt per piece is used for small items such as cups or small plates.
-
Place the stilt securely on the kiln shelf before placing the ware on top.
-
-
Arranging as a Set (for large pieces): For very large or heavy pieces, three stilts can be arranged in a triangular pattern to support the weight and maintain balance, preventing the piece from tilting during firing.
Features and Advantages
-
High Heat Resistance: Made from high-quality refractory material that withstands high firing temperatures in ceramic kilns.
-
Minimizes Contact Marks: The pointed tips make minimal contact with the glaze, leaving only tiny marks after firing, which can be easily removed with a grinding stone or sandpaper.
-
Prevents Damage: Allows you to glaze the entire piece without worrying about the glaze melting and sticking to the kiln shelf, which could cause the piece to crack or damage the shelf.
Caution: Choose a stilt size appropriate for the weight and size of the ware. If the ware is too heavy, the stilt may break or sink into the softening clay during firing.
