C-71#1 Outside Calipers, or "Horn Calipers," for measuring workpieces, 8 inches (8" Outside Calipers) are essential traditional measuring and transferring tools in ceramics and pottery, especially for throwing vessels on a potter's wheel, to achieve precise dimensions.

Primary Uses

  • Measuring and Controlling Outside Diameter: Used to spread the two metal legs to measure the external width of a vessel, such as the rim of a vase, the belly of a bowl, or the base, to check the size while the clay is still wet or leather-hard.

  • Transferring Sizes for Mass Production: Ideal for mass production of sets of workpieces. Measure the size from a prototype, lock the distance with the spring nut, and then use it to gauge subsequent pieces on the potter's wheel to ensure all pieces have the same consistent plumpness/width.

  • Measuring for Lids: Used in conjunction with inside calipers to measure the proportions of the vessel's rim and the size of a lid (e.g., teapot lid, jar lid) to ensure that after drying and firing, the parts will fit together perfectly, neither too tight nor too loose.

Highlights
  • Fine Adjustment System with Spring Nut: The joint is equipped with a bow spring and a threaded adjustment, allowing for highly precise fine adjustment of opening or closing the legs, and firmly locking the position, preventing it from easily shifting when applied to a workpiece.

  • 8-inch Size Covers Medium-Sized Work: The slender, rounded tips of the legs gently touch the clay surface without distorting the work, and the 8-inch steel length is a standard, flexible distance suitable for making cups, bowls, trophies, or medium-sized vases.
