Tips for working with clay
- Safer for fingers than general utility knives: The fettling knife is designed with just enough sharpness for "slicing clay" but not so sharp that it easily cuts fingers like steel utility knife blades. This allows for confident and safer handling.
- Flexibility is key: Because the blade can bend slightly, when pressed against the curved surface of a vase or bowl to trim, the blade conforms well to the curve of the piece, resulting in a smooth, consistent surface without deep gouges.
