P-26#05 Half-oval serrated aluminum lip

P-26#05 Aluminum serrated half-moon rib. The flat rib is comfortable to hold and can perfectly conform to the curves of the piece being formed. It is used for scoring the surface to increase adhesion when joining clay, and for leveling uneven high spots. The blade is smoothly curved and springy, with no sharp edges or corners that could gouge the clay.

Primary Uses:

• Scoring and Joining Clay:

  • This is its most important function. Potters use these fine serrations to score the clay surface where pieces will be joined (e.g., attaching mug handles, assembling slab constructions, or attaching sculptural elements). The serrations create numerous small grooves. When slip is applied and the pieces are joined, the clay locks together securely, preventing cracking and separation during drying and firing.

• Leveling and Compacting Dense Clay:

  • In hand-built pieces with rough, uneven, or thick excess clay, using a smooth rib directly might remove too much clay. Potters will first use this serrated rib to work over the surface. The serrations quickly shear away high spots, achieving a precise and even level, before a smooth rib is used for final finishing.

• Creating Line and Dot Textures:

  • The serrated edge can be used to drag across the surface of a piece on a potter's wheel to create fine parallel grooves, or dragged in a zigzag pattern to quickly create natural wave patterns on vases and planters.

Recommended Clay Condition: Works best on clay from "soft to medium leather-hard." The serrated teeth will score the clay deeply and cleanly without causing chipping or cracking. After use, wipe clean and air dry in the shade.
