Primary Uses

• Shaping and Smoothing the Surface of Vessels: Used to press against the surface of a clay piece while it is spinning on the wheel to remove excess water, clear finger marks, and help shape the spherical, curved contours of vases, bowls, or cups into a smooth and consistent form.

• Compressing Clay from the Inside: The curved edge of the rib is used to press and push the clay wall from inside the vessel to remove air bubbles, compact the clay to an even density, and help expand the bulging shape of the piece without the clay becoming saggy or losing its form.

• Trimming Excess Material: The pointed or straight flat edge is used to scrape off slip or excess clay around the base of the piece before cutting it from the wheel.
