
Engobes is a hybrid of slip, glaze, and underglaze used to coat the surface of clay to achieve a desired color or texture, and is often used in decorative techniques such as sgraffito (scratched patterns) and majolica (painting over white glaze).
It can be applied to wet clay, greenware, or bisque and fired in the cone 5–10 temperature range (approximately 1186–1305°C). However, engobes can affect the glaze's outcome, as seen in the example below at cone 6 (1222°C / 2232°F).
