- Main Uses (Smoothing and Shaping): Used for pressing against the surface of the workpiece while the wheel is spinning, to smooth the clay surface evenly, remove fingerprints, and help create smooth, rounded slopes (such as the curve of a bowl or a vase) for a beautiful proportion.
- Removing Water and Air Bubbles: Used to scrape off excess water from the surface of the workpiece during shaping, to prevent the clay from becoming too wet or soft and collapsing, and to help compact the clay.
- Scraping Excess Clay from the Base of the Vessel: The straight edge or angled part of the wooden rib can be easily used to scrape off excess clay at the base of the workpiece attached to the pottery wheel.
