Have you ever worked on a large piece and couldn't finish it, needing to come back to it later, but were worried the clay would dry out while you were away? Here's how to maintain moisture.

• Plastic Wrap: Wrapping your work in plastic helps prevent water in the clay from evaporating, keeping it soft and moist so you can continue working on it.
• Damp Cloth Cover: Placing a damp cloth over your work before wrapping it in plastic will add moisture around the piece, preventing the clay from drying out quickly.
• Sealed Container: If you have multiple pieces, store them together in a sealed plastic container. The moisture from the clay will spread throughout the container, keeping the pieces soft and preventing them from drying out quickly.
• Mist Spray: If you notice your piece starting to dry, you can lightly mist the surface with water and quickly rewrap it. This will add moisture, but be careful not to spray too much, as excess water can make the surface mushy or cause cracks.
• Cool & Shady Storage: Wind and heat accelerate water evaporation from clay. Storing your work in a cool, shaded area will extend the time you have to continue working on it by several days.
• Double Protection (Damp Cloth + Bag): The safest method is to first wrap your piece in a damp cloth, then place it in a plastic bag or a sealed container. This method will maintain moisture for much longer than plastic wrap alone.

However, if you need to stop working for several days, you can store the plastic-wrapped piece in the refrigerator (not frozen). The cold will slow down water evaporation, but be sure to let it warm up to room temperature before resuming work, otherwise it might crack.
