A circuit breaker and electricity meter are essential parts of any ceramic kiln setup. A circuit breaker helps protect the kiln and electrical system from faults, while an electricity meter allows potters to monitor power consumption and electrical capacity.
Circuit Breakers
A circuit breaker automatically cuts off the electrical supply when it detects an abnormal condition, such as an overload or short circuit. This helps protect wiring, motors, kilns, and other electrical equipment from damage.
The three main types are:

MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker): Up to 100 amps, commonly used in residential applications.

MCCB (Moulded Case Circuit Breaker): Up to 1,600 amps, typically used in commercial and industrial systems.

ACB (Air Circuit Breaker): Up to 6,300 amps, generally used in high-capacity industrial systems.
Circuit breakers can also be divided into two operating technologies: Thermomagnetic and Electronic.
Thermomagnetic breakers can be used with both AC and DC systems and are generally more affordable. However, their accuracy can be affected by ambient temperature because they rely on heat to detect overloads.
Electronic breakers offer more precise current measurement and adjustable trip settings. Some models can also record trip history, making fault monitoring easier. However, they are typically more expensive and designed primarily for AC systems.
Electricity Meters
An electricity meter, or watt-hour meter, measures the amount of electrical energy consumed by a home, pottery studio, or industrial facility.
There are two main types:

Single-Phase Watt-Hour Meter: Used in single-phase electrical systems. It measures energy consumption through electromagnetic induction and displays the reading on a mechanical or digital register.

Three-Phase Watt-Hour Meter: Designed for three-phase electrical systems, commonly found in larger studios and industrial facilities. It measures energy consumption across all three phases.
Why Do Potters Need Them?
For potters, circuit breakers and electricity meters are important for both kiln safety and maintenance. They can help identify electrical abnormalities early and provide useful warning signs when a kiln or its electrical system may need inspection or servicing.
