10 ways to keep yourself safe and healthy in the Pottery Studio

Although ceramic sculpting may not seem particularly dangerous, as most tools are small and larger ones are usually not sharp, accidents and dangers can actually occur anywhere, especially in a studio with ceramic kilns, power tools, clay dust, and various chemicals.

Therefore, sculptors should pay more attention to safety in their sculpting work and ceramic studio arrangement. It's better to prevent problems than to regret them later, right?

1. Choose an appropriate location for the ceramic kiln.

The key equipment for ceramic work is the ceramic kiln, which requires careful planning for its installation location, considering the surface it rests on, the surrounding environment, and the distance between the kiln and walls or other materials.

During firing, the kiln radiates heat around its body, potentially causing nearby materials or objects to become extremely hot, melt, or accumulate heat, leading to a fire hazard.

Therefore, ensure that flammable materials, combustible liquids, and heat-sensitive items are properly stored away from the kiln to reduce the risk of fire and accidents.

2. Have an emergency shut-off system for the kiln.

If kilns and other power tools in the studio have an emergency shut-off system or appropriate electrical protection, it will increase safety in case of malfunctions.

For example, installing appropriate circuit breakers for electric kilns, as well as other tools such as clay extruders, slip mixers, etc.

In case of an anomaly, stop using the equipment and cut off the power supply immediately following safety procedures. If the equipment does not have an emergency shut-off system, turn off and unplug it when it can be done safely to prevent the equipment from continuing to operate or turning on unintentionally.

3. Ensure good ventilation in the studio.

Ventilation is another important aspect of safety in a ceramic studio, especially in areas where chemicals, glazes, or materials that may produce fumes and airborne particles are used.

Adequate ventilation should be provided, such as opening windows or doors when environmental conditions permit, and installing a ventilation system suitable for the type of work to help reduce the accumulation of dust and fine particles in the air.

However, simply opening doors or windows may not be sufficient for controlling fine dust, so it is important to also focus on proper cleaning and dust management.

4. Do not let clay dry into dust.

Dry clay scraps or clay can break down into fine dust, which may contain crystalline silica, and prolonged inhalation of such dust can be detrimental to the respiratory system.

A simple method is to manage messy clay or clay scraps before they dry, by using wet cleaning methods instead of dry sweeping to help reduce dust dispersion.

Additionally, clay and other raw materials should be stored in tightly sealed containers or bags to help reduce dust accumulation and dispersion within the studio.

5. Clean up after every use.

After finishing a sculpting project, the workspace should be cleaned regularly, especially areas where clay scraps or dust have accumulated.

It is recommended to use wet cleaning methods, such as using a damp cloth, sponge, or mop to wipe down floors and surfaces, to help trap dust particles and prevent them from becoming airborne.

Avoid dry sweeping or using air blowers, as this can easily disperse fine dust and lead to inhalation.

6. Store fine powders in covered containers.

Powdered materials such as pigment powders, glaze raw materials, or substances used in ceramics should be stored in tightly sealed containers with clear labels.
